Retro Clothing Buying Guide

Retro is defined as a clothing style of the past; any clothing or accessories which echoes a well-defined style of relatively recent times is retro. There was an explosion of fashion styles throughout the twentieth century as people enjoyed the freedom of increasingly liberal attitudes towards casual clothing and experimented furiously with textures, cuts, shapes, patterns and designs.

There were the teddy boys of the 50s, the mods, rockers and punks of the 60s, disco fever during the 70s, the glitz and glamour of the 80s and most recently the grunge, raving and rapping of the 90s to name but a few. There are now countless different styles which modern designers take hints from today.

Classic Retro Styling

We should proudly remember that the UK is well known for its forward-thinking bold sense of fashion and a wide range of styles originated here. Our clothing defines us and so often reflects the current mood; historically the fashion scene has seemed inextricably intertwined with the political and social mood of the entire country. A strong influence for fashion in any decade, apparent from some of the examples above, is the music that people are listening to at the time. A particular genre so often dictates the cutting edge of fashion; right now for example, the return of band music to mainstream culture has resulted in the latest retro styling with longer haircuts, skinny jeans and round neck jumpers.

Modern Trilby Hats

There are many examples of retro styles which are en vogue at the moment. These include the skinny ties, drainpipe jeans, short-brimmed trilby hats and black and white-uppered brogues to name but a few. However, when brought into a current context these retro styles are not necessarily slavishly true to the original. Very often particular items simply take cues from the original idea and mix and blend them into a modern look. A prime example is the trilby hat, which may have been plain before but is now available in loads of mad colours or with funky print designs.

The Latest Retro Clothing & Accessories

For a retro look you can choose your own style based on one of the fashion periods of the past, combine retro styles, or simply select items that are really fashionable now, but have their design roots firmly in the past. With the continuous rotation of these classic looks, it is only a matter of time before the latest clothing will be considered retro fashion and so it continues…
