Top 10 Trends 2008

Here at equip we are pleased to see that the fashion industry has finally realised something we knew all along, accessories are vital to creating the perfect outfit. A good shirt can only get you so far, and that is why every catwalk show featured tons of men’s accessories. To save you having to trawl through each collection yourself we have condensed hours of catwalk action to a nice and easy 10 step programme.

 1. Skinny Ties

It is unbelievable how popular these things are. Dolce and Gabbana, Versace, Gucci and Louis Vuitton all focused on the skinny tie. They were primarily black or silver but the choice is yours. We have a fantastic electric blue skinny tie if you are feeling more adventurous, and at only £17 they are a steal.

2. Flat Caps

No longer just for your grandfather, these were another huge hit on the runway. Brad Pitt has adopted the trend so we must be onto something big here. They were primarily plaid, like Goorin Bros ‘Gregor’ Cassel flat cap but one of our favourites is the Goorin Bros ‘Percy’ flat cap which is a bit more structured and it is plain in design for versatility. The good news is they have also been featured heavily in the Autumn/Winter collections so this is a trend that is here to stay.

3. Red Belts

Versace and Gucci both used red belts to really make a statement. It is a fantastic way to instantly add colour and style to an outfit and makes a nice change from the old brown and black that we are so used to.   We recommend Energie’s ‘Energie’ belt in red which is £45. We reckon these will fly out the door so you had better be quick. If red is a bit much for you then Armani used a lot of white belts; of which we have plenty. A personal favourite is the F by Friis ‘Horrow’ belt £35.

4. Sunglasses

Ray Ban. The only choice this season. Nearly every catwalk show featured the Aviator or the Wayfarer, and their contrasting styles mean that you can choose according to your look. Ray Ban is the classic sunglasses company and I don’t see them ever going out of fashion so invest in a pair now!

5. Pendant Necklaces

John Galliano featured long pendant necklaces with shirts open revealing a bare chest. However we know that might not be for everybody, so alternatively a long pendant over a fitted t-shirt can look fantastic. Catwalk fashions don’t always directly translate into everyday life; it is about making them work for you. Here are a few pendants which will definitely work. Both by Assassin the ‘Feather’ pendant and ‘Acid Rosary’ necklace are great examples of quality silver men’s jewellery.

6. Scarves

Neckwear appears to be a key focus this season, whether it’s skinny ties, necklaces or scarves. The look for scarves remained fairly neutral, but they did vary in thickness. This isn’t like wearing a winter scarf for warmth; this is a style statement, so they are made from a much lighter material. F by Friis do a fantastic range called the ‘Soft’ Sheer scarf which is available in black, sand or mocha; this season’s key colours, and at £10 you cannot go wrong. If you do feel the cold then Energie’s ‘Moyamba’ skinny scarf is right on trend but a little thicker.

7. Gloves

Hopefully we won’t need these for practical reasons much longer; gloves are however making a big style comeback. They have more detailing and style and add an extra finishing touch which is so often neglected nowadays. The F by Friis ‘Easi’men’s leather gloves are in the style of this season’s must have Gucci gloves, yet they are fraction of the price.

8. Bracelets

Roberto Cavalli and John Galliano both used a lot of men’s jewellery this season and in particular bracelets. There are three main options with a men’s bracelet, a cuff, bangle or linked bracelet. The cuff was used primarily in Cavalli’s shows whereas Galliano favoured linked bracelets, but here are great examples of both. Assassin’s ‘Faith Rosary’ bracelet £75 and the F by Friis ‘Smart Arm’ leather cuff £25.

9. Bags

This season bags are a lot more structured and formal. Although canvas messenger bags did still feature, there is a definite move away from this trend, and weekend bags are really being embraced. F by Friis do a quirky green bag called the ‘Staff Sports’ bag which retails at £59. This is huge, and can either be used as a sports bag or a weekend bag, however the plus with this new style is they are smart enough to be used on a daily basis. If you are fond of a messenger bag, then Energie’s ‘Funk It’ men’s messenger bag is a great combination of the two styles.

10. Cufflinks

Dressing up is the key idea of the moment. Gone are the days of wearing Converse trainers with a suit, it is all about a high polished finish now and so cufflinks are an essential. Assassin have the ‘Guitar’ cufflinks which add extra detail, or if you like to keep things more plain then go for the Chris Hawkin’s ‘Blade’ cufflinks. Both are made from 925 sterling silver.
